New York, N.Y. —Immigrant workers and their allies commemorate the “Day without Bread” with community delegations calling on prominent restaurant customers to join the movement in support of workers’ campaign for basic worker protections at Tom Cat Bakery. On April 21, 2017 hundreds of community allies rallied behind Tom Cat Bakery workers’ call for a “Day without Bread” as dozens were fired in the wake of an I-9 audit at the factory.

WHO:      Current and former Tom Cat Bakery workers, prominent chefs and restaurateurs, community allies, concerned restaurant customers.

WHAT:      Delegations to businesses addressing use of Tom Cat Bakery products.

WHEN: Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 1:30pm

WHERE:    Columbus Circle fountain

Background:

In March 2017, Tom Cat Bakery management told workers that President Trump’s Department of Homeland Security was conducting an investigation of the bakery.  April 21st marks one year since workers organized a “Day without Bread” in response to the firing of dozens of workers as a result of the audit.  Workers are calling on management to continue talks with them started last year.  Workers demand the implementation of basic policies to protect still-at-risk workers inside the factory, and to resolve negotiations for a fair and dignified severance for the longstanding employees displaced by the ICE audit.

Over the past year, prominent food businesses and consumers including celebrity chefs Eric Ripert of Le Bernardin, April Bloomfield of The Spotted Pig, and the Jean-Georges Vongerichten Restaurants, have ceased their use of Tom Cat products as a result of the worker’s campaign. New York City officials inspired by the campaign are exploring measures to ensure these protections for all workers in the city.
